HOBART / TAMPA (March 8, 2022) – IRONMAN announced today that the Australian island state Tasmania will become the newest addition to the IRONMAN 70.3 Oceania calendar with a five-year agreement, running through 2027.
The inaugural IRONMAN® 70.3® Tasmania triathlon is set to be held on Sunday 5 February 2023, with athletes from across Australia and around the world to make their way to Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania.
Athletes will not only breathe in all the stunning region has to offer, but also take on a spectacular and challenging course in and around the historic city of Hobart. Tasmania features breathtakingly wild landscapes, untamed and seemingly purpose built for adventure. Tasmania provides the opportunity to reconnect with nature in the morning, critique the latest in modern art in the afternoon and have your choice of world-class dining options in the evening.
The IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania triathlon will offer a 1.9km (1.2-mile) swim course in the Derwent River that hugs the historic Battery Point before embarking on a 90km (56-mile) ride with the most vertical gain of any IRONAMN 70.3 bike course in Oceania. The 21.1km (13.1-mile) run will allow athletes to enjoy some of the best scenery in and around Hobart, with the world-famous IRONMAN 70.3 finish line to be alongside Princes Wharf.
IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania will also see some of the world’s best triathletes alongside more than 1,000 athletes, with the event to feature a male and female professional race.
Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said the event would deliver around $2 million in economic benefits to Tasmania every year of the five-year agreement.
“This is fantastic news for Tasmanian sporting fans that will add to the state’s growing reputation for delivering elite sporting content,” the Premier said.
“With more than 170 IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlons worldwide, this will put our State on the map and once again showcase our stunning natural locations to the world.
“Local tourism and hospitality businesses will reap the benefits, with more than 1000 competitors and their supporters coming to Tasmania and eating and shopping in local businesses, and staying at local hotels.
“For those competing, best of luck with your training in the year ahead and I look forward to welcoming you to Tasmania in 2023 for the inaugural event.”
Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of Oceania for The IRONMAN Group, said that the organisation was excited to bring IRONMAN 70.3 racing to Tasmania.

Entries for IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania will open on 31 March 2022.

— Russian and Belarusian professional athletes ineligible from 2022 IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events –
ST. PETERSBURG / LONDON / TAMPA (March 2, 2022) – The IRONMAN Group stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, our athletes and their community, and condemns the actions dictated by Russian leadership during this deeply troubling international crisis.
The 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 St. Petersburg triathlon scheduled to take place on July 17 will be cancelled and registered athletes will receive further email communication.
In line with the recommendation by the International Olympic Committee and World Triathlon regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international competition, The IRONMAN Group, effective immediately, will disallow participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in St. George, Utah and our two IRONMAN World Championship events taking place in St. George, Utah and Kona, Hawai’i.
Furthermore, all Russian and Belarusian professional athletes will be ineligible to race at any 2022 IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon events, including this weekend’s IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai triathlon. No age group participants will be allowed to compete under the Russian or Belarusian flag at any IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 events in 2022.
While we recognize the difficult situation created for Russian and Belarusian athletes by these steps, we believe these are necessary to protect the integrity of our events.
Additionally, we understand that the current situation will be extremely challenging and worrying for athletes residing in Ukraine to compete in any 2022 IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 events and are offering our assistance for those athletes. Ukrainian athletes registered for an IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon will receive further communication with options available to them.
